Review #1-The beginning
The beginning of the year consisted of knowledge enhancement. We worked on learning the basics for literary analysis. This includes learning allusions! The Bible and Greek mythology can be found in just about any text. The references are so widespread that they provide a basic foundation of literature and archetypal understanding. These texs are rich with stories that are repeated millions of times through out the course of literary history. Without this knowledge, one's understanding of literary elements would be incomplete. Another interesting thing we did was read Foster's How to Read Literature. This book described certain aspects of literature that are repeated and thus meaningful, such as weather, hansel and gretel and cardinal directions.

I'm surprised that you chose this alone as one of the major things we've learned. I agree that it's definitely important but I feel like we hardly spent class time on it. Most of the summer stuff felt like background info that we were expected to have already or were being made to do to cover anything we might not know. But this would still be a helpful thing to look at for studying since it has been so long so it's always good to be reminded.
ReplyDeleteI think it's really good that you included the summer work into one of your categories. While, like Matthew stated, I'm not sure I would have put it in a category all by itself, I think it is definitely an important aspect to the course. My only suggestion... in order to just give this category a little more substance... is to provide specific examples of things you learned from this initial work. I think that will help when using this to study.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you included this. I'd also like to see terms, critical lenses, history of lit, and so on....
